Asteroid Day: Raising Awareness About Cosmic Threats and Earth’s Safety
Asteroid Day, observed annually on June 30, aims to raise global awareness about the potential threats posed by asteroids and the importance of planetary defense. The date marks the anniversary of the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia, where a massive explosion, believed to be caused by an asteroid or comet, flattened over 2,000 square kilometers of forest. This incident remains the largest recorded asteroid impact on Earth. In 2016, the United Nations officially recognized Asteroid Day to educate the public about asteroids, their role in our solar system, and the need for increased detection and preparedness for potential future impacts. The initiative was co-founded by astrophysicist Dr. Brian May, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, filmmaker Grig Richters, and B612 Foundation President Danica Remy. Through educational events, scientific discussions, and community engagement, Asteroid Day emphasizes the importance of global collaboration in monitoring near-Earth objects and developing strategies to mitigate potential risks. By commemorating past events and focusing on proactive measures, Asteroid Day serves as a reminder of our planet’s vulnerability and the collective responsibility to safeguard it.
